The Corfu Public Historic Library is the oldest public library in Greece.
Its origins date back to the mid-18th century, when the rich library of Canon Iacovos Saverios Canal, a theologian and locum tenens of the Latin Metropolitan, was added to the library of the Monastery of Saint Justina of the Franciscan monks, located in the suburb of Garitsa.
These two libraries, which are estimated to have contained around 3,500 volumes, formed the cornerstone of the later library ‘of the former Ionian Academy’.
We seek the support of the Corfu community, and indeed from any other citizen or organization, to achieve our Library’s goal, which is the most comprehensive and modern provision of knowledge. Any donation – monetary, material (equipment, maintenance), or books – is considered essential.
